OKANAGAN -- Six players had at least five kills for the UBCO Heat, who beat the Manitoba Bisons 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13) in a five-set thriller that saw the hosts come back from a set down. Manitoba was led by
Ben Carleton's 19.5 points, including 17 kills, three assisted blocks and five digs.
Eric Ogaranko and
Jordon Heppner also had ten kills for the Bisons.
Tied at 16 in the first set, Manitoba won nine of the next 11 points to take a 1-0 lead. A kill from Heppner and then an attacking error closed things out. The Heat led by three for most of the second set to tie things up. The third went to the Bisons, who scored 14 of the final 20 points after being tied at 11. Carleton was the catalyst for his side, including kills on three of the final four points in the set.
UBCO led 4-0 early in the fourth and didn't trail the rest of the way, setting up an exciting final set. Manitoba battled back from a four-point deficit but couldn't complete the comeback, falling two by.
The two teams will play again tomorrow night.
