REGINA -- Inclement weather forced a postponement of the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars women's soccer game this evening in the Queen City. The game has been rescheduled to Sunday at 4 pm local time in Regina.
The season opener for both teams had plenty of excitement prior to weather shutting things down.
Regina had the game's first chance three minutes in, as Winnipeg native Peyton Enns got inside positioning in the box and got an accurate shot off, however veteran Bisons netminder
Karina Bagi stayed with it, diving to her right to make the save. Bianci Bucci then blocked the rebound and cleared the ball out of harms way.
The Herd's first opportunity came two minutes later, as 2021 U SPORTS All-Rookie member
Bianca Cavalcanti created space for herself just outside the 18-yard box and was tripped up, resulting in a free kick. International sensation
Dalima Chhibber took the free kick, however it was blocked by the Cougars.
Regina opened the scoring 11 minutes in, as Jessica Chow, another Winnipeg native, floated a ball into traffic near the net. Chhibber got a foot on it, but it took a Cougars bounce, as Delaney Rhinehart headed it back at Bagi. The Bisons goalie got a hand on the ball, however it settled near Haylee Evans, who eventually tapped in the rebound.
Four minutes later, Manitoba responded, thanks to an impressive string of passes that started in their own end. Bucci displayed great touch, finding a sprinting Cavalcanti, who dashed past midfield and collected the ball near the far post. She dished the ball to forward
Jenna Kunkel, who passed it right back. Cavalcanti then found midfielder
Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki across the field at the far post, who made no mistake to complete a string of 15 consecutive passes. The goal was Johnston-Krulicki's first as a Bison.
The game was called shortly after and will resume Sunday. Manitoba will travel to Saskatchewan tomorrow for a tilt against the Huskies and then return to Regina. Catch all the action at canadawest.tv.
