Box Score The Manitoba Bisons made it two wins in a row with a 46-4 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Field, demonstrating dominance in all three facets. The contest was played in front of over 4,000 fans as part of the team's annual homecoming, who got their money's worth as the Herd allowed just 104 total yards on defence, the third-least in program history. They also rushed for 352 yards, the fifth most in the history of the program.Â
It's the second game in a row that the Bisons defence hasn't allowed a touchdown, while
Breydon Stubbs rushed for a career-high 169 yards to lead the way.
Noah Anderson added 85, which was also a career high, while
Dolan Hills -- playing in place of injured All-Canadian
Nick Thomas -- paced the defence with 6.5 tackles, an interception and a sack, both of which were the first in his university career. The Hunting Hills product now has 16.5 tackles over the last two games, while
Sebastien Reid also recorded an interception against his former team.Â
The win improves Manitoba's record to 2-2, moving them into a tie for third with Alberta, while the Dinos -- who were led by 56 receiving yards from Gob Deng and 11.5 tackles from Subomi Oyesoro --Â fall to 0-4.Â
"I really think the UBC game [last week] where we had some injured players and guys had to step up, like
Dolan Hills -- I talked about him in the locker room -- I think he's somewhat symbolic of stepping up. He's played great football. Look what Dolan's been doing, he was like that last week too," said Bisons head coach
Brian Dobie.Â
"They didn't sucomb to our 0-2 start, and they're confident. I think defence always had that confidence, all through spring camp and training camp. We got shocked when we lost a couple All-Canadians and
Connor Kyliuk, our starting defensive end, but we responded from shock really well. The 104 [from the defence], that's crazy. I think the offence needed to build their confidence and a game like today did that."
Manitoba dictated time of possession entering the second quarter, but held onto a 6-3 lead, as the Dinos pinned their ears back defensively, while putting the Bisons in tough field position thanks to the leg of punter Chris Maclean, who averaged 49.1 yards, with a longest of 65. The game was blown wide open with 4:36 to go in the half however, as Manitoba scored 19 straight points.Â
Stubbs, who averaged 9.9 yards per carry, scored from ten yards out for the first major of the game, while a
De Shawn Le Jour fly sweep from 15 yards out, as well as a team safety and
Niko DiFonte field goal rounded out the first half scoring. Le Jour's major was also the first of his U SPORTS career.Â
Manitoba continued to pound the rock in the second half, with
Jackson Tachinski finishing off three separate drives with rushing touchdowns. He averaged four yards per carry, while Anderson averaged 6.5 and
Vaughan Lloyd averaged 7.3. It's the second game in a row against Calgary that the Herd have ran for over 200 yards, after recording 230 last season.Â
"That was the game plan. We felt we could run the ball on them," said Dobie. "[The decision was made] by certain personnel matchups as well as the way they play defence, and our offensive staff right was right."
The Dinos failed to record a first down in the third quarter, but continued to fight. Owen Porcu was all over the ball in the second half and had ten tackles and a sack overall, however Manitoba's ability to control play on first down and dictate time of possession (38 minutes to Calgary's 21) made the difference.Â
Manitoba will now head to Saskatchewan to take on the conference's only undefeated team in the Huskies, while the Dinos will face UBC.Â
