WHKY: T-Birds capitalize on chances, beat Bisons 8-2

Shots were 27-25 UBC, but UBC's top scoring line of Madisyn Wiebe, Mackenzie Kordic and Cassidy Rhodes combined for nine points.

Box Score WINNIPEG — The shots were nearly even, at 27-25 for UBC, but the visitors top scoring line of Madisyn Wiebe, Mackenzie Kordic and Cassidy Rhodes combined for nine points, as UBC topped Manitoba 8-2 on Friday night at Wayne Fleming Arena.

The pair connected on each of the T-Birds' first three goals, and have combined for 19 points in their first five games for 4-0-0-1 UBC. Manitoba had a number of good looks, but only two got past Elise Hugens, while the visitors also went four-for-four on the power play.

The T-Birds took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission in a fast-paced period that saw just one infraction to UBC with less than a minute to play.

The Herd had an excellent chance to open the scoring just under six minutes in. Forward Aimee Patrick recieved a pass in the neutral zone, peeling from her left to right to enter the attacking zone, out-skating two UBC players in the process.

Her speed created a two-on-one, but Hugens was able to deny forward Ashley Keller with a right pad stop off of Patrick's dish.

Less than a minute later, UBC pushed back to open the scoring. The T-Birds won a battle for the puck near the half wall, with the biscuit eventually finding Wiebe's stick. She passed off to  Rhodes, who went forehand to backhand in front for a 1-0 lead.

"That first save that their goalie made was a really nice save, and that kind of set some momentum for their game," said Bisons assistant coach Jordy Zacharias.

"It was a great game. There were a lot of great chances that we had, and a lot of great chances they had. Their chances just happened to go in. If you watch, it was still a great game of hockey. The ice was going both ways in a lot of ways, they were just able to capitalize more."

The visitors made it 2-0 with 8:29 left. Wiebe had time and space just above the right circle, winding around for an accruate wrist shot from the left. Her initial attempt was stopped by Kimmy Davidson, but Kordic was there to tap in the rebound.

Davidson kept the game within two with five minutes to go, closing up the five-hole quickly on a bang-bang pass from behind the net which landed on Kordic's stick just outside the crease.

With less than three minutes left, Manitoba had another excellent chance, as forward Molly Kunnas stole the puck away in front of the UBC net, dropping it off to Julia Bird, but her wrist shot was denied high blocker by Hugens.

The Wiebe line added to their impressive night less than two minutes into the second period. Kordic controlled possesion behind the Bisons' net, finding Wiebe, who tipped her teammates' pass above the blocker of Davidson in front.

The visitors made it 5-0 after 40 thanks to back-to-back power plays less than two minutes apart.

First, Kordic scored on a tip-in from Rylind MacKinnon, and then with just under seven minutes to go, Sophia Gaskell rounded out the scoring on wrist shot at the top of the left circle for her first of the year.

Manitoba's best chance came from forward Kate Gregoire, who tipped the puck past a UBC defender in the neutral zone eight minutes in, using her speed to create a great chance from the right wing that was stopped.

The T-Birds added three more goals in the third. MacKinnon scored on a wrist shot off a no-look pass with just under three minutes gone, and they got two more tallies off a five-on-three, one from MacKinnon and the other from Makenzie McCallum.

Manitoba showed impressive fight despite the final score.

They got on the board at the 12:42 mark on the power play, as Brenna Nicol tapped in a shot from the side of the net by Gregoire for her first of the year.

They added a second with just over two minutes left, as Dana Goertzen scored on a wrist shot set up by excellent passing from Rachel Gottfried and Kylie Lesuk that started in the Bisons end. The goal was also Goertzen's first of the season.

Both teams will play again tomorrow at 2 pm.

"I'm definitely proud of the group, being able to push back and respond each time," added Zacharias. "Things started to get a little out of control, but we were still able to get two at the end. That's a good feeling for tomorrow."
