Box Score The Manitoba Bisons starting trio of Kylie Lesuk, Dana Goertzen, and Kate Gregoire combined for five points as the Bisons held on to beat the MacEwan Griffins 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena.

For the second straight game, the first goal came in the opening minute, this time by the Bisons. Lesuk dragged the puck out from behind MacEwan goaltender Brianna Sank's net and stuffed it home on the backhand at the 28-second mark. It was the Bisons' first time opening the scoring this year.

The hometown party wouldn't last, however, as MacEwan scored its third powerplay goal of the weekend on a Robyn Short wrist-shot from the point went off the stick of Kori Paterson and in to tie the game at one halfway through the first.

With only nine seconds left in the first period, MacEwan took its first lead of the game on a wraparound goal by Jesse Jack to put MacEwan up 2-1.

The Bisons came out swinging in period two as Kylie Lesuk batted down an airborne puck with her glove and sprang linemate Kate Gregoire on a breakaway. The fourth-year Bison slid it home to tie it in the first minute of the period.

Less than two minutes later, the Bisons found themselves on the powerplay, and Sarah Dennehy's right-circle wrist-shot found the top corner of the net to put Manitoba on top again. It was the first shorthanded goal the Griffins allowed all season.

"You could see some of the maturity in our group being able to face some adversity, and how to respond and re-set, especially when it comes to penalties," said coach Jordyn Zacharias.

"You can get down a rabbit hole really quick, I think both games we were able to re-set and come back out, whether it was the next shift or next period. When we move the puck the  way that we do, you find a lot of success. We just kept getting better throughout every period the whole weekend."

Another breakaway pass helped extend the lead with another home-alone goal. Ashley Keller's second of the weekend with Molly Kunnas getting an assist.

The team then came up with a huge penalty kill to deny the Griffins their fourth powerplay tally of the weekend with Dennehy spending four minutes in the box for spearing. Dennehy was fighting for a puck in front and was called for the stick infraction on Sank.

During the kill, Gregoire had another breakaway, but this time Sank shut the door.

While the Bisons didn't score in the third period, four straight MacEwan penalties put caused them to be on the defensive for a lot of the third. Eventually, they closed the lead down to one as Maria Ayre sped down the left wing and put one past Bison goaltender Megan Relf, who hadn't seen a shot for several minutes.

Then, with the goalie pulled, MacEwan was unable to get much going into the Bisons zone, who shut down MacEwan's last-minute push. Manitoba hung on for their second win in as many days over MacEwan.

The Bisons will travel to Mount Royal next weekend, and the Griffins will take on the red-hot UBC Thunderbirds.
