Box Score CALGARY -- A one-goal game was broken wide open late in the second half, as the Calgary Dinos beat Manitoba 4-0 in both team's 2023 season openers. The hosts scored three times in the final 12 minutes to secure the win.Â
Manitoba was led by fifth-year goalie
Karina Bagi, who stopped six shots in the loss. Second in program history in wins (13) and goals against average (1.43), Bagi kept her team in the game with a few key first half saves. Her best stop of the day came 25 minutes into the contest, when she got her hands in front of a shot from in close following a free kick.Â
Â
Calgary opened the scoring less than ten minutes in, as Ella Djuranic won a battle for possession and slid the ball past Bagi from just outside the 18-yard box for the eventual game-winner.Â
Manitoba's best chance of the first half came from captain
Jessica Tsai, who intercepted a pass in Calgary's defensive third 21 minutes in, getting off a strong left-footer that went just wide of the far post.Â
Â
Both sides battled to secure the upper hand in the second half. The Herd's best chance of the game came in the 68th minute, as
Tabata Bravo surged down the right flank, receiving an excellent header at midfield which gave her a breakaway. Her shot was denied in the box by Katie French.Â
Â
Calgary opened the floodgates not long after. In the 80th minute, Brooklyn Colvin sent a through ball from midfield just behind the back line where Djuranic was streaking and got a touch to the ball to beat the keeper for her second of the game.
Rachel Barlow had a nice individual effort to find the back of the net just one minute later to make it 3-0, and Grace Moore finished off a brilliant pass in stoppage time for the final goal in this one.
