WINNIPEG -- The red-hot Manitoba Bisons defeated the visiting Calgary Dinos 4-1, notching their seventh win in their last eight games.
Â
Bisons goaltender
Emily Shippam stopped 22 of 23 shots and
Norah Collins buried two goals in the win. Collins now has eight goals this season, tied for second in Canada West.
Â
After a physical Friday night game where the Bisons won 3-1, Manitoba came out flying in the first period.
Â
Third year forward
Dana Goertzen almost got Manitoba on the board early with a great second chance effort off her own miss that was barely turned away by Dinos goalie Amelia Awad.
Â
The Dinos got a great chance of their own just moments later when Hanna Reagh was taken down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot which was expertly turned aside by Shippam.
Â
Manitoba continued to press, registering seven shots on a power play in the middle of the frame. Collins had a shot from the slot ring off the crossbar as the Dinos held on to kill the penalty.
Â
Despite out shooting the Dinos 15-7 after the first, the score remained 0-0 heading into the second.
Â
The Bisons finally found an answer for Awad early in the second when
Aimee Patrick buried a backhand on the powerplay to make it 1-0.
Â
After some great saves from Awad,
Julia Bird made it 2-0 after a great move to cut inside and slide the puck pass the goalie. The forehand-backhand finish was set up from a two-on-one, as the puck bounced off a ref's leg and right to Enns, who burst in and found Bird on the odd-player rush in the Dinos zone.
Â
Collins found the back of the net twice in the third period. She scored first off of a well executed give-and-go which she finished from the side of the net. Collins added her second of the game a few minutes later when she careened around the net, cut into the slot and fired the puck past Awad.
Â
"I think that third year is kind of a big year for a player to make that jump. I think the most impressive part is just seeing her (Collins) confidence grow and seeing her comfort with the puck," said Bisons head coach
Jordy Zacharias.
Â
Dinos captain Rebecca Clarke broke the shutout by firing a shot low blocker just out of reach of Shippam to give the Dinos life. Calgary nearly made it a two-goal game with several chances on the powerplay late in the third period but Shippam was up to the challenge.
Â
The Bisons held on to seal the win 4-1 and are in third place in the East Division of Canada West, with 17 points.
Â
"Not every game is going to be the same, but we've got to approach every game the same way," added Zacharias. "I'm excited to see how we can stick to our game plan and make teams have to adjust to us."
Â
The Bisons take on the top-seeded, defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds next weekend at Wayne Fleming Arena.
