It's a busy weekend on the UM campus, with soccer hosting games at the west turf Saturday and Sunday at 1pm (click
here for tickets), and football hosting Regina at 5 pm on Saturday (click
here for tickets).
On the pitch, 1-5 women's soccer has scored 12 goals this year, tied for seventh in Canada West. Expect fireworks as they welcome Calgary (5-1) and Lethbridge (2-4) to town, two teams they faced off against to open the conference season on the road. Manitoba scored five goals against their Alberta rivals in early September, including two each from forwards
Janelle Chomini and
Nyema Prentice-Whyte, who've combined for seven goals on the year. Overall, there were 17 goals scored during the Alberta road weekend.Â
Prentice-Whyte leads Manitoba with four goals in her true freshman season, including a beauty last Sunday against Alberta where she raced by three defenders, tapping the ball to the far post just inside the box. Her four goals are tied for the fourth-most by a rookie in a regular season in program history. Meanwhile, Chomini leads all Bisons, with eight combined goals over the last two years.Â
Captain
Jessica Tsai assisted on the Prentice-Whyte goal, and she's just two assists shy of tying the regular season conference record held by Olympic gold medalist Desiree Scott (26).Â
Meanwhile, centre back
Shannon Lee has a career-high five points on the campaign, including two goals. Her most recent tally was an absolute beauty, where she bent a 30-footer inside the top right corner on a free kick, showing her power and accuracy.Â
