After a home opening weekend full of promise and plenty of chances, the Bisons women's soccer team continues their home schedule as part of Homecoming Weekend. Both games will be played at Princess Auto Stadium, on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm against the 2-4 Saskatchewan Huskies. Saturday's contest concludes a busy day of sports on campus, with the homecoming football game kicking things off at 2 pm.Â
The 0-5-1 Bisons showed their grit, tenacity and skill at the East Turf against 5-0-1 Mount Royal last weekend. They out-shot the top contender in Canada West 18-10 in Sunday's game, while
Taleesa Minnaar scored her first U SPORTS goal the day prior. Manitoba has scored a goal in four of six games on the season, with four different players finding the back of the net.
The Herd enter play sixth in Canada West, with 83 shots overall, and are hoping to turn those chances into goals. On Sunday, three of their second half attempts hit the iron, with mere inches separating them from a victory over the second-place team in Canada West's Prairie Division.
Taryn Cabak leads Manitoba with 14 shots, tied for eighth in the conference, while her eight shots on goal -- including multiple quality looks last weekend -- are tied for seventh. Overall, 15 different Bisons have recorded at least one shot, with Cabak,
Sarina Mann -- who scored her first U SPORTS goal against Regina two weeks ago -- and
Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki all recording at least 11 shots on the season, showing Manitoba's ability to get quality looks all through their lineup, and from anywhere on the pitch.Â
Manitoba has been particularly dangerous on set pieces, including a goal in the opening weekend of the season from
Evelyn Lekivetz. Look for that to be a strength again against the Huskies, who are third in Canada West with 15 goals this season. Their 96 shots are also third in Canada West.Â
Nine different Huskies have scored a goal so far this year, led by three each from Isaballe Lachance and Danielle Lehmann. The visitors have won four of the last five contests between the two sides, with Manitoba's last win coming in August of 2022.Â
