The Bisons women's basketball team has added an international recruit who made her debut in Spanish senior ranks at just the age of 15. Point guard Sonia Gómez Herresanchez helped Baloncesto Torrelodones to a championship in Madrid in her rookie season then led her team in assists the following year.
Gómez Herresanchez brings with her a work horse mentality and elite court vision. She's a well-rounded player who scores and rebounds with ease. In her last season with Baloncesto Torrelodones, she shot 27.8 per cent from beyond the arc.
"We are excited to see how Sonia's high IQ, competitiveness and work ethic transfer to U SPORTS. Beyond her abilities on the court, she's someone who genuinely cares about her teams and embraces being coached. Those qualities make her a great fit for our current group," said Michèle Sung, head coach of the Bisons women's program.
Off the court, Gómez Herresanchez excels academically. She earned a 13.01 out of 14 on Spain's PAU university entrance examination, the highest grade in her graduating class. She also posted a 9.5 out of 10 average during her final two years of high school at Colegio San Agustín Los Negrales.
In 2023-24, Gómez Herresanchez was selected as one of the top 50 projects from more than 3,000 submissions across Spain in the Investiga I+D+I program. The recognition included an invitation to present her work at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
"I'm really proud to join the Bisons family for the upcoming season and ready to give everything I have for this team," said Gómez Herresanchez. "I can't wait to get to work, compete every day, and do my part to help the team succeed. (I'm) excited for what's ahead."
