WINNIPEG — The Calgary Dinos carried their first-half momentum into the final 45 minutes and completed an opening-weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons with a 5-0 victory Saturday night at East Turf Field.
After earning a 2-1 win in Friday's season opener, Calgary built a 3-0 halftime lead on Saturday before adding a pair of late goals to secure the result.
The Dinos controlled much of the early play and opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Ella Djuranic finished a chance created by Mykena Walker for her first goal of the season.
Calgary doubled its advantage in the 25th minute as Addi White found the back of the net off an assist from Erica Mysko. White nearly added another moments later, striking the crossbar as the visitors continued to apply pressure.
Manitoba generated a handful of opportunities of its own in the opening half. Bianca Cavalcanti fired wide in the 23rd minute, while Sarina Mann tested Calgary goalkeeper Cheridan Johnson in the 31st minute.
The Dinos extended their lead just before halftime when White scored her second goal of the match at the 45-minute mark, again set up by Mysko, giving Calgary a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.
The Bisons looked for a response in the second half, earning a corner kick through Mann in the 69th minute, while Cavalcanti created another opportunity later in the half. Calgary, however, continued to dictate possession and territory.
Goalkeeper Kailey Johnston-Krulicki kept Manitoba within reach for much of the second half, making saves on Sarah Donick, Djuranic, and Donick again as Calgary pushed for additional insurance.
The visitors eventually broke through late. Josie Holt scored her first goal of the season in the 87th minute off an assist from Donick before Kaleigh Major added another less than two minutes later to round out the scoring.
Johnston-Krulicki was called upon several times throughout the match and made a number of important stops, including saves on Mysko, Sofia DiGiacomo, Donick and Djuranic.
The match featured a physical second half, with Manitoba's Taliah Evans and Calgary's Jaden Tomaszewski each receiving yellow cards.
The weekend marked the beginning of a new era under interim head coach Fabio Capone, while newcomers such as Mackenzie Munro-Flora, who scored Friday's lone Manitoba goal, continued to gain valuable early-season experience against one of the conference's top programs.
The Bisons will continue their road schedule next weekend with a two-match series against the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Sept. 12 and 13. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be streamed live on Canada West TV. Manitoba then returns home Sept. 26 and 27 to host the MacEwan Griffins at Princess Auto Stadium. The game on Sept. 26 is the Bisons' homecoming match and all get in free. Fans can claim their tickets here.
