Bisons eliminated from playoff contention in women's soccer

Lose hard fought game to Victoria 1-0

Box Score WINNIPEG - The University of Manitoba Bisons women's soccer team was officially eliminated from the playoffs in the Canada West with a 1-0 loss to the Victoria Vikes on a cold Friday night at the U of M Turf Fields – West Side.

Carlita Branion-Calles scored the game's lone goal in the first half for Victoria (9-2-0). The Bisons (1-6-4) applied pressure all game in an evenly-played match but were unable to generate many quality scoring chances against their opponents.

"I thought our team performed very well tonight," said Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas. "We fought up until the last minute. Even though we lost this game, we can go home and say we gave everything."

Manitoba came out strong and controlled the play at the start of the game but as the half progressed, the Vikes began to create good offensive opportunities. They looked close to taking the lead on a Jaclyn Sawicki strike but Bisons goaltender Chloe Werle leapt and had the ball graze off her fingertips and then the crossbar to keep it a scoreless game.

The Vikes would take the lead in the 28th minute when Branion-Calles scored on an unguarded net with Werle out trying to play a loose ball. The visitors outshot the Bisons 12-4 in the half and headed to the break with a one goal lead.

Victoria's offence continued to produce high quality chances in the second half but Werle continued to make outstanding saves to keep it a one goal game. First, she stopped Emma Greig in tight then on a Victoria free kick from the top of the box, Werle made another leaping save to keep the Bisons within striking distance.

In the 82nd minute, Bisons forward Daniella Scerbo had a chance at a loose ball inside the box. However, before she could get a clean kick at the ball, it was smothered up by Victoria goaltender Tanya Jones. It would be Manitoba's best chance to score in the half and Victoria would hold on for a 1-0 victory.

The Bisons will finish their conference regular season tomorrow night at the U of M Turf Fields when they host the Fraser Valley Cascades. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. and the Bisons will recognize fifth year defender Gillian Sidon and graduating player Laura Stewart in their final home match on senior day.

"Although we cannot make it to the playoffs, we have a very important game tomorrow," said Martinez Lagunas. "We want to say bye to our graduating players with a win so we are going to play with all of our intensity tomorrow."
