CALGARY – The #8 Manitoba Bisons swept the University of Calgary Dinos on Jan. 11 at Jack Simpson Gym when they defeated them 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-13).
While the Dinos slip to 4-10, the Bisons improve to 8-6 to hold down fifth in the conference standings.
Calgary's leading scorer was Janna Ogle with eight kills on the night followed by rookie Megan McCreary with five more. Brianna Solberg and Ali Woolley picked up 17 and 16 digs respectively and setter Jordhynn Guy recorded 21 assists.
For the Bisons, middle Jordana Milne scored a game-high 13 kills. Taylor Pischke followed that with 12 kills and 15 digs and Rachel Cockrell added 11 kills and nine digs for Manitoba. Libero Caleigh Dobie recorded 12 digs while setter Brittany Habing added 40 assists.
Manitoba got off to a hot start in the first going ahead 10-3 before head coach Natalie Gurnsey was forced to use a timeout after a big block from the Bisons. The seven point lead held up until the technical timeout.
From there, the Bisons sailed to a first set win with an 11-point lead with a quiet Dinos squad on the other side of the court. The first set would end 25-14 in favour of the visitors.
Calgary tried to do their best to flip the switch in the second. Coming out with a lead very early on, the Bisons took a 10-7 lead after some Dinos hitting errors. A strategically called timeout lead the Dinos to go on a 5-0 run to go ahead 12-10.
At the technical, Calgary was up 16-13 and maintained that three-point lead up until 20-17 despite Manitoba's best efforts. Their efforts eventually came to fruition as they were able to tie the game again at 22 with Pischke and Milne at the net.
Those two Bisons would prove to be the difference as both teams battled to the end, needing extra points to determine the winner. Manitoba came out on top with two key kills from Milne to win it 26-24.
In the third, the Dinos ran out of steam, unable to put much together in terms of offence. Manitoba handily solidified the win and the sweep of the Dinos with a 25-13 third set win.
Next weekend, the Bisons will host the Mount Royal Cougars, while the Dinos will head north to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas.
