Box Score With a 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22) win Friday, January 23 night at the PAC in Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies played spoiler to the University of Manitoba Bisons' bid to inch closer to the Canada West women's volleyball postseason.
The Bisons entered the weekend series holding onto the seventh and final playoff position by just two points. After the loss, the Bisons, who are the reigning CIS champions, fall to 9-10 with five matches remaining, while the Huskies improve to 5-14.
Third-year middle blocker Emily Humbert powered the Huskies to the victory recording a career-best 21 kills in the match. She also added a solo and assisted block. Outside hitter Jenelle Sokoloski added another 10 kills and 12 digs, while Anne Hanbidge recorded a team-best 15 digs.
Rachel Cockrell led the Bisons with 20 kills, followed by Brittany Habing with eight. Jordana Milne led Manitoba defensively with 10 digs.
The four sets were close on the night with 20 tie scores in the games. In each win, the teams would go on a scoring run to take a large lead that the other couldn't recover from.
After a 5-5 tie in the first set, Saskatchewan began to break away scoring the next three points. Manitoba couldn't recover from the lead. The Huskies won 25-16.
The second set mirrored the first in favour of the Bisons. After a tie early in the set, the Bisons began to break away outscoring Saskatchewan 6-1 to lead 17-12. Manitoba went on to win 25-19 in the game.
Much like the sets before, Saskatchewan went on a five point run to lead 20-10. The Huskies finished the frame winning 25-17.
Tied at 16 in the fourth and final set, the Huskies pulled ahead by three and each time the Bisons would recover the ball. But Manitoba couldn't put a point streak together to regain the lead. The Huskies won 25-22.
