The Bison women's soccer team began their 11th season in CIS action in style after a home win (4-0 over Thompson Rivers) and tie (1-1 against UBC Okanagan) during the season opener weekend on Sept. 4-5.
The Bisons (1-0-1) will now travel to play at Saskatchewan Huskies (0-0-0) on Sat., Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. CT and then play at Regina Cougars (0-0-0) on Sun., Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. CT.
Manitoba leads the East Region standings after the first week of conference action. There is a new format for qualifying for post-season in Canada West for women's soccer in 2015. Top 6 in each of the two regions will qualify for the playoffs. There is now 14 regular season games as opposed to 12 in the 2014 campaign and the Bisons seek to improve on their tenth place overall finish in the conference out of 16 teams when they posted a 4-4-4 record.
The Herd were paced over the first weekend in 2015 by second year forward Bruna Mavignier who had two goals and one assist and leads the Canada West scoring with five points. In addition, fourth year midfielder Selina Speranza scored a goal and an assist and is tied for second in conference scoring with four points while rookie midfielder Sara Schur and rookie Alanna Shaw both added one goal each.
Fifth year goalkeeper and co-captain Chloe Werle started and played in both conference games and is now tied for second in conference Goals Against Average at 0.50 and second with 18 conference saves.
Bison Notes: Last season, Manitoba defeated Regina 2-1 at home (Sept. 5/14) and lost 3-1 versus Saskatchewan at home (Sept. 6/14). The last time the Bisons defeated the Huskies was back in the 2009 season (W 4-0 at home on Sept. 19) and the last win by the Herd on the road at Saskatchewan occurred in 2008 (W 5-1 on Sept. 20).
