The Bison women's soccer team finished their conference regular season in dramatic fashion as they clinched a playoff spot with a thrilling 2-0 home win versus Victoria on the last day of the season. The Bisons ended up in sixth place in the Prairie Division of the Canada West conference and qualified for the regional playoffs as they travel to play at the Calgary Dinos on Saturday, October 29 with first kick at 1 p.m. CT.
Manitoba is in the post-season for the second consecutive season and the fifth time they have reached the playoffs in the 12 year program's history playing in Canada West.
The Bisons (4-7-3) will face first place Calgary (9-1-4) for the second time in the 2016 season. Both teams met in the conference regular season at Calgary and the result was a 3-0 win by the Dinos on Sun., Sept. 25/16. This is the first time both teams have meet in the post-season.
The winner of the one match playoff will advance to the Canada West women's soccer Select Six tournament that will be hosted by the highest remaining Pacific Division team and run from November 3-6.
Fifth year midfielder
Selina Speranza is tied for 11th in conference goal scoring with six goals in 14 matches while team captain
Amanda Wong is tied for 10h with five conference assists in 14 matches. Speranza finished in the team lead in scoring with eight points, Wong with seven points while second year midfielder
Sara Schur (three goals, one assist) is third with four points. Speranza is tied for seventh in conference with 25 shots on goal.
Second year goalkeeper
Maddie Wilford has started and played in all 14 conference games and was second with 106 conference saves, third in conference Save Pct. at .869, 11th in Goals Against Average at 1.19 plus tied for sixth with five shutouts and tied for seventh with four conference wins.
The Bisons went 2-3-2 at home and 2-4-1 on the road during the 2016 campaign.
