The Bison women's soccer team started their 12th season in CIS action after a road win (5-0 at University of Northern British Columbia) and tough loss (2-0 at Alberta) over Thompson Rivers) and tie (1-1 against UBC Okanagan) during the 2016 season opener weekend on Sept. 9-11.
The Bisons (1-1-0) will now host Saskatchewan Huskies (0-2-0) on Sat., Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m. CT and then play Regina Cougars (0-1-1) on Sun., Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Manitoba is tied for third in the Prairie Division standings after the first week of conference action. The Top 6 in each of the two conference divisions will qualify for the playoffs. The Bisons seek to improve on their fourth place finish in the division (ninth place overall finish in the conference) out of 16 teams when they posted a 7-5-2 conference regular season record in 2015.
The Herd were paced over the first weekend in 2016 by fifth year midfielder
Selina Speranza who notched a natural hat trick with three goals in only 15 minutes during the 5-0 road win. Second year midfielder and team captain
Amanda Wong has registered three assists in two games while fourth year forward
Alyssa Daley and second year midfielder
Sara Schur both have added one goal each.
Second year goalkeeper Maddie Wilford started and played in both conference games and is now third with 16 conference saves, fifth in conference Save Pct. At .889, tied for fourth Goals Against Average at 1.00 and tied for sixth with one shutout.
Bison Notes: Last season, Manitoba defeated Regina 2-1 on the road (Sept. 13/15) and 1-0 at home (Oct. 24/15) while the Herd lost 3-2 versus Saskatchewan on the road (Sept. 12/15) and 2-1 loss at home (Oct. 25/15). The last time the Bisons defeated the Huskies was back in the 2009 season (W 4-0 at home on Sept. 19). Manitoba has defeated Regina in the last three conference regular season games.
