Bisons in scoreless tie at Winnipeg in women's soccer to start 27th annual Duckworth Challenge

Manitoba earn 4 of 6 possible points in home-and-home series against Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the University of Manitoba Bisons battled to a scoreless draw in the soccer portion of the 27th Annual Duckworth Challenge Sunday, October 8 afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

The game was the backend of a home and home series between the two cross town rivals. Manitoba won the series opener 4-0 Saturday afternoon.

Manitoba with the tie improves to 3-4-3 in regular season play. Winnipeg goes to 1-7-2 in the Canada West Women's Soccer standings.

The opening five minutes was a cautious but well played battle of field position by both teams. Winnipeg got their first good scoring chance in the 6th minute when Shae-Lynn Dodds found herself deep in the slot but her shot was turned away by Jarmoszko.

Manitoba had their best chance of the opening half when Haley Ward raced in on Fordyce, who made a finger tip save to keep the game scoreless.

The Bisons put on pressure in the 23rd minute with two back-to-back scoring chances only to have Fordyce stand tall and turn both away.

The defensive game came into play once again in the second half with neither team allowing their opponent to get any quality shots on net.

Wesmen captain Jamila Calvez had the best chance for Winnipeg in the 63rd minute but Wilford made a diving save to keep the game at 0-0.

Wesmen goalkeeper Madison Fordyce made five saves. The duo of Justina Jarmoszko and Madison Wilford made six saves for the Bisons. Wilford replaced Jarmoszko in the 33rd minute due to inury.

Manitoba took a total of 12 shots, Winnipeg finished with 11.

Second year defender Amy Clayton (Wpg) and third year midfielder Amanda Wong (Man) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Match. This was the first portion of the 27th annual Duckworth Challenge (pits University of Manitoba and Winnipeg in women's soccer, women's and men's volleyball and women's and men's basketball).

Winnipeg will close out their regular season home schedule next weekend with games Friday against MacEwan and Saturday facing UNBC. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Manitoba will face the Timberwolves on Friday Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. CT and the Griffins on Saturday Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. CT at the U of Manitoba.
