Ella Gray and Keiran Zziwa are Boston Pizza Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

Gray and Zziwa have been named for the honour for the week ending November 7, 2021.

Leading their teams to a combined 4-0 record against the Winnipeg Wesmen, Ella Gray (women's volleyball) and Keiran Zziwa (men's basketball) have been named the Boston Pizza Bisons Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 7, 2021.

Bisons women's volleyball got their season going with a home-and-home against the Wesmen, playing downtown on Thursday and at IGAC on Saturday afternoon. Consistently excellent in both matches, helping Manitoba win in four sets in each, was first-year left side Ella Gray.

Gray, a 5'11" hitter from Surrey, BC, got her weekend started with a 13-kill performance at Winnipeg, getting her numbers on 42 attacks and adding an ace, two blocks and eight digs.

Gray really got going in Saturday's win, though, as she was a go-to weapon in key moments for the Bisons — helping provide the team some breathing room when three of four sets came down to just two points. Gray led all players with 20 kills on 39 attacks, a fantastic .385 hitting percentage, while adding two solo blocks and 12 digs.

Gray, a student in the Faculty of Arts this year, last played for the Semiahmoo Thunderbirds before joining the Bisons.

Women's volleyball are on the road this weekend to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Similar to women's volleyball, Bisons men's basketball also swept their home-and-home with the Wesmen, though not without some dramatics along the way. Leading the team in both games was fifth-year guard Keiran Zziwa.

In a Friday matchup that will already be pencilled in as one of the best on campus this season, Zziwa was all over the court to keep the Bisons competitive. With 29 points, ten rebounds, four assists and three steals in 34 minutes, the 6'0" Winnipeg product was a walking bucket and ensured Manitoba was in position for the game's final moments, when James Wagner would hit a three with 30 seconds left to put the Herd up for good.

Zziwa followed up Friday's performance with 15 points, five boards, three steals and a block on Saturday, as the Bisons would win by seven points. His point total tied for the team lead with Wagner.

In his final year of eligibility, Zziwa is studying in the Faculty of Arts this year.

Bisons men's basketball are home again this weekend to face the Regina Cougars. Game times are 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday at IGAC.
