Box Score WINNIPEG- The University of Victoria Vikes knocked off the University Manitoba Bisons by a score of 1-0 on Sunday, September 18 at IG Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba.Â
Â
The visiting Vikes opened the scoring in the 36
thminute to take the early 1-0 lead. On the second corner kick of the match for Victoria, fourth-year midfielder Emma Skalik placed the ball perfectly in the Bisons' goal area before being deflected, resulting in an own goal.Â
Â
The goal off the Skalik corner proved to be all the visitors needed to secure the victory, their second of the 2022-23 Canada West season.Â
Â
The loss drops Manitoba's record to 3-3-0 on the season and is their first ever loss on the pitch inside IG Field.Â
Â
"We created the chances out there today, we just were not clinical when it came time to use them," said Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas.Â
Â
"The goal they scored was a bit unlucky. It was from the corner into an area with lots of traffic and then into our net but that is just how the game is sometimes. Again, we need to be clinical with our chances."
Â
The first scoring opportunity for the Bisons came in the ninth minute of the match. The pass from Manitoba forward
Janelle Chomini, who found space down the center of the field, deflected off a Vikes' defender onto the foot of teammate
Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki. The second-year winger directed a pass through the box, narrowly missing several players before being cleared from harms way. Â
Â
Just a few minutes later at the 13-minute mark,
Dalima Chhibber nearly capitalized on a free-kick close the centerline with the ball ending up on top of the UVic goal.Â
Â
In the 31
stminute, Johnston-Krulicki placed another ball perfectly in the box for teammate
Nicole Davis, who got her head on it but put the ball over the net. Despite several scoring opportunities, the Bisons found themselves down 1-0 at the half after the Vikes goal in the 36
thminute.Â
Â
The 56
thminute brought a golden opportunity for the Bisons to even the score. After a ball over the top from Chhibber, Johnston-Krulicki placed another pass perfectly onto the foot of Tsai who had her shot blocked from point blank range inside the Vikes goal area.  The visitors cleared the ball and maintained their one goal advantage.Â
Â
With the score still 1-0 in the 81
stminute and Bisons goalkeeper
Karina Bagi out of position, a shot from Victoria's Erin Jensen on an empty net was stopped on the line by Manitoba defender
Rebecca Waterman. The key save gave the hosts a fighting chance for the rest of the match. However, the hosts were unable to find the back on the net, falling to the Vikes by a final score of 1-0.Â
Â
The Bisons return to action next Friday September 23 at 7:30 p.m. with the first of back-to-back games when they welcome the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to IG Field. Manitoba will conclude their two-game weekend against the Regina Cougars on Saturday September 24 once again at 7:30 p.m. on IG Field.Â
