There are few teams hotter than Manitoba's volleyball squads, who have won a combined 13 games in a row. As a result, they've earned weekly recognition, with right side Andi Almonte and left side Eric Ogaranko getting the nods.Â
Almonte kept UBC Okanagan on their heels all weekend with her serve, back row defence and cerebal attack. In the second set of Friday's 3-0 sweep (the women swept both games), Almonte was a steady presence on defence, consistently keeping the Bisons in system. She was targeted 14 times and was unflappable.Â
Almonte finished Friday's game with 11.5 points, including six digs, eight kills (with just one error, hit .500), two service aces and three assisted blocks. It was the third game in a row where Almonte hit double digits for points.Â
On Saturday, Almonte hit. 385 with no errors. As a team, Manitoba didn't record an error until the third set, and they didn't allow more than 15 points in any of the three sets they played. Almonte added two aces, once again forcing UBCO out of system often, while adding ten digs -- the fifth time this season she's been in double digits in that category.Â
On the season, Almonte has 19 service aces, just two shy of her career best. She's also averaging a career-high 2.35 points per set.Â
On the men's side, the crafty lefty Eric Ogaranko was the Bisons' most efficient attacker in a two-game sweep of UBCO. He had a combined 29 kills over two games, hitting .378 on Friday and .409 on Saturday.Â
Friday's game was a career best for the Vincent Massey alum. His 19 kills were the most in his Bisons tenure, as were his 24 points, as Manitoba came back from a set down to defeat the Heat.Â
On top of his presence on the attack, Ogaranko contributed four assists on the weekend, along with 12 digs and eight assisted blocks. He is averaging 3.26 points per set this year, which is second on the team.Â
