On Monday night, Bisons staff, coaches, and student-athletes collected in Marshall McLuhan Hall at UMSU University Centre to honour dedicated Bisons at the Block M / Academic All-Canadian event.
The event serves a dual purpose — to give a Block M sweater to Bison athletes who have spent at least three years competing for the University of Manitoba, and to present U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian certificates to those who achieved the status in 2023-24.
At the completion of the 2023-24 season, 140 University of Manitoba student-athletes qualified for U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status. This is the tenth straight season that 100 or more student-athletes have achieved this national recognition.
Overall, 56 student-athletes earned a GPA of 4.0 or higher, while 26 achieved AAC status in either four, five or six consecutive seasons as Bisons.
"On behalf of the University of Manitoba, we are very, very proud of you," said President Michael Benarroch.
"We are excited about your achievements, both academically and in sports, and it's a great privilege to be here with you. This is a tremendous feat. To see 140 of you having achieved [Academic All-Canadian] standard, that's really exciting for us here at the University of Manitoba."
Meanwhile, 69 student-athletes were given Block M sweaters, and 815 have now been given out since the annual tradition was established in 2012-13 by former Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne and Associate Athletic Director Curt Warkentin.
The Block M celebration was established as a way to celebrate the Bisons' rich tradition and history, build University of Manitoba pride and spirit, and foster a stronger bond with future alumni.
"The presentation is symbolic," said Gene Muller, University of Manitoba Director of Athletics and Recreation.
"It's symbolic of your development as leaders. You've put in the time and the effort to compete. You have been more than just contributors, you have been leaders within your teams, and we rely on you to continue on this path. I want to remind you that you don't stop being a Bison when you leave here. Hopefully your Block M sweater is a reminder of that."
