WINNIPEG -- The nationally ranked Bisons track and field teams had ten top four finishes on Friday in successful start to the annual Jim Daly Bisons Classic at the UM campus.
The Classic is the largest university meet hosted by the Bisons this year aside from nationals March 7-9, bringing together over 40 athletes ranked in the top 12 in the country.
Both the women's and men's 4x200 relay teams finished in first, while
Daxx Turner and
Graham Wright -- who've both already booked their ticket to nationals -- won the triple jump and weight throw respectively.
The women's relay team consisted of
Donnae Gordon,
Kendall Marriott,
Nicole Davis and
Zoe Nonato, and the men's quartet featured
Jordan Soufi,
Tyler Cox-Yestrau,
Graham Hutchison-Campbell and
Roy Tambal Musa.
Both group's times -- 1:42.89 and 1:28.22 respectively -- were season bests. The men's result has them in fourth in the nation, while the women are in ninth.
Turner's leap of 15.48 metres marked the fourth time he's jumped over the national auto-qualifying standard of 14.79 metres (all have been over 15), while Wright's winning toss of 18.12 metres was his fifth toss over the national standard of 17.49.
Other notable finishes included a second place result from
Joshua Suelzle in the weight throw (17.02 metres), along with a fourth-place showing from
Cole Gagnon in the same event (13.86 metres). Wright, Suelzle and Gagnon are all ranked in the top 12 in the country.
In the women's triple jump,
Eniola Adepoju finished second at 11.41 metres, while rookie
Sarah McChristie finished fifth at 10.79 metres.
In the women's 1000,
Lena Klassen ran a personal best time of 2:53.39 to finish second, while
Angela Kroeker ran a season's best time of 2:55.15, finishing fourth.
In the men's 1000, captain
Calvin Reimer finished third, at 2:27.51.
The 1000s were both final lap thrillers, with the top three women separated by less than three tenths of a second. In the men's race, No. 9 nationally ranked Reimer and No. 15 ranked Brayden Mytopher of Regina had a spirited chase, with Mytopher coming in less than five tenths of a second faster, for a PB of 2:27.07.
