In women's basketball, Bisons lose on home court

#4 Regina Cougars beat Manitoba 89-59

Box Score The #4 Regina Cougars won 89-59 over the University of Manitoba women's basketball team at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday, January 24.  Regina dominated the court making 55.2% of field goal shots taken. Manitoba was at 27.2%. The Bisons were on-point with sharp passes and some solid shots but the Cougar defense proved difficult to push through.
 
Manitoba is now 3-12 and Regina improves to 13-2. The regular season is almost over with about one month to go until playoffs.  Going up against the number four team in the country could be daunting but the home side went in with a determination.

 
"We proved that we could play with them in the first half," said Bisons head coach Michele Hynes.
 
The Cougars started the first with the lead and but the Bisons fought to catch. They came as close as 15-16 with a smooth shot from Manitoba's Robyn Eyer. The period ended at 20-16 for Regina.  Cougar guard and fourth leading conference scorer Nicole Clarke shot 10 of those 20 points for her team, including two 3-pointers. Manitoba's forward Allison Balasko scored five total points for her team with one 3-pointer.
 
In the second quarter, the visitors widened the gap further staying as many as eleven points ahead throughout. The period finished 37-26 for Regina. By the third they were 65-41 and in the end they won by a wide margin.
 
Clarke, who is also ninth in CIS for shooting, went into the game with an 18.3 points per game average and against the Bisons she had the game-high of 16 points plus added nine rebounds. Clarke's teammate Charlotte Kot got a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Bison Allison Balasko finished with 11 points and captain Christiane Fischer with a team-high six boards.
 
Regina and Manitoba go head-to-head again January 25. Tip off is a 5pm CT.
