Box Score WINNIPEG - The #4 Regina Cougars women's basketball team made it 10 straight conference wins with a 74-50 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, January 25 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
Charlotte Kot had 17 points and collected five rebounds in only 21 minutes of action for the Cougars (14-2). Jennilea Coppola finished one board shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
With the win, Regina ensures themselves that they will at least keep pace with #3 Alberta and #5 Saskatchewan atop the Canada West's Prairie Division, pending the outcome of Saturday's games.
Meanwhile, the result extended Manitoba's conference losing streak to 12 games. Allison Balasko had 11 points to lead the Bisons (3-13) while Sheree Carmona-Galdamez chipped in with 10.
"We competed for 40 minutes," said Bisons co-head coach Michele Hynes. "This is going to be a game that we are going to learn from."
After a tight first quarter, Regina started the second on a 11-3 run to open up a 14 point lead on the home team. The Cougars would maintain the double digit margin heading into halftime, leading 39-26.
The visitors shot an outstanding 18-38 (47.4%) from the field in the first half while the Bisons were paced offensively by Jenilyn Monton, who poured in seven points after 20 minutes of play.
Manitoba tried to chip away at the score in the third quarter, shooting an even 50% but they had no answer for the Cougars offence. Regina improved their overall shooting percentage with a 9-for-12 effort from the floor in the third and extended their lead to 18 with one quarter left to go.
Regina would continue to pour in the baskets in the fourth on their way to the win. They would finish shooting 50.8% in the game and out-rebounded the Bisons by a 45-31 margin.
Coming up for the Bisons is a pair of games next weekend in British Columbia, starting on Friday, January 31 in Kamloops when they take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. The Cougars will also head west for their next game on Friday versus the Pacific Division-leading Fraser Valley Cascades.
