Box Score Winnipeg, MB – It was a high-intensity match at Investors Group Athletic Centre, as the Bison women's basketball team faced the Calgary Dinos for the second time on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Dinos offense, led by guard Kirstie Sheils, took off in the second half and they finished the game with a 100-71 win. Calgary is now 3-1 for the season, while Manitoba is still looking for their first win. This game started out much more competitive than the night before, with the Bisons in the lead for most of the first half. However, the Calgary offense ended the game with three players scoring 20-plus games and 100 points on the board, which proved insurmountable for the home team.
"We gave up 35 points in a quarter, and you're not going to win many games after that," said Bison Head Coach
Michele Hynes, while also saying her team played well offensively.
The Bisons came out strong in the first quarter, forcing many turnovers and racking up three three-pointers to take an early lead. The Dinos clawed their way back from a 17-9 deficit to finish the quarter tied 23-23.
The second quarter started much like the first, with Manitoba's captain
Jenilyn Monton and guard
Nicole Konieczny each scoring two three-pointers early. Calgary's offense, led by Kristie Sheils and Kelsey Lund, kept them in the game. The Bison led 40-38 at halftime.
The Dinos took an early lead to start the third, with Lund finding four easy lay-ups from the post position to give her team an 6-0 run. Calgary outscored Manitoba 35-16, giving them a 73-56 lead heading into the final quarter.
The second half belonged to the Dinos, as the home team seemed unable to keep up with their offensive momentum. Led by Lund and Sheils, Calgary expanded their lead and finished the game winning 100-71.
Calgary's Sheils led the game with 27 points, followed closely by Lund who had 24 and forward Claire Colborne with 21.
Konieczny led the Bisons with 16 points—including four three-pointers. Calgary had 53 team rebounds, compared to Manitoba's 27.
