Box Score VANCOUVER — The No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds women basketball team dominated Friday, February 13 night's 40-minute affair Friday night defeating the Manitoba Bisons 85-49. The 'Birds extend their winning streak to 11 games and improve to 16-3 on the season, while the Bisons fall to 1-18.
A dominant opening quarter by the Thunderbirds set the tone for the game. The Bisons caused little trouble to shake the solid UBC defence.
The first quarter started with a forceful act by UBC's Harleen Sidhu, who scored eight points from the opening tip. That strong start by Sidhu inspired the Thunderbirds to take control and steer the game towards them. The Bisons were unable to respond and were left with a mere six points at the end of the period. UBC led 26-6.
The Bisons picked up their game in the second quarter thanks to hard-working guard Sheree Carmona-Galdamez, who scored six points. Despite outscoring UBC by two in the period, the Bisons trailed 43-25 at half time. A Stephane Gill jumper with just over a minute to go capped off an 8-3 Manitoba run that brought the visitors to within 14 points.
Sidhu opened the third with a bucket to put UBC ahead by 20 points and the Bisons never got any closer, despite six points from Melanie Edel and four from Gill. The home side ended the third leading 62-36.
As Thunderbirds' Kamila Wojciechowski hit a layup at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the crowd erupted. Wojciechowski's layup meant that every single UBC player hit the scoresheet. The final score was 85-49 for the 'Birds.
Four UBC players finished in double figures scoring. Sidhu, Kris Young and Adrienne Parkin scored 16, 14, and 13 accordingly. Super-sub Kara Spotton scored 11 points in a total of just 15 minutes.
Forward Edel of the Bisons was her team's top scorer. Edel had 10 points in 17 minutes of playing time. Guard Gill chipped in with nine points of her own.
With the Saskatchewan Huskies winning tonight, both teams sit atop the Canada West Conference with identical 16-3 records, however the Thunderbirds currently hold the tiebreaker.
Win tomorrow and UBC will wrap up first place in the conference and home court advantage throughout the Canada West playoffs.
The final regular season game for both teams will tip off at 5 p.m. PT Saturday at War Memorial Gym.
