UBC Thunderbirds Defeat Manitoba Bisons 80-64 In Women’s Basketball

The two teams will play each other again tomorrow afternoon, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. CT at Investors Group Athletic Centre

Box Score WINNIPEG, MB – The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds faced the Manitoba Bisons at Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday, January 15 for women's basketball action. It was an action-packed game that ended with an 80-64 win for UBC. The Thunderbirds are now 5-6 for the season, while the Bisons are struggling to capture their first win.

Both teams showed strong offensive play, but fouls proved to be a major factor as the visiting Thunderbirds scored 20 of 26 free throws and the Bisons only went to the line three times—scoring four of five free throws.

"We're struggling with putting scores and stops back-to-back," said Bisons Head Coach Michele Hynes. "We go on a run, but then we let them go on a run."

Manitoba forward, Jenilyn Monton, opened the game with a three-pointer for the home team. The two teams exchanged the lead for the early part of the first quarter, until the Thunderbirds' offense picked up momentum. Led by forward, Kara Spotton, UBC went on a 13-point run to take a 23-12 lead by the end of the first.

The second quarter started with a 10-point rally by Manitoba, almost recapturing the lead before the Thunderbirds' offense woke up. With Spotton continuing to lead their offense, she added eight points to her tally—scoring 29 of 35 points at halftime.

With the score 35-27 at the half, Manitoba tried to get another rally to close the gap. But the UBC offense did not let up and consistently capitalized on Bison turnovers. Guard Diana Lee put up three three-pointers in rapid succession to widen the lead for the visiting team.  The score was 57-40 heading into the last quarter.

The visiting team continued their momentum, but not until after Manitoba scored a seven-point run to bring the game within 10.  With a few three-pointers and stellar shooting from the free-throw line, UBC maintained their lead to win 80-64.

Spotton led the game's scoring with 38 points (two away from tying the school record for most points in women's basketball conferenc action). Guard Nicole Konieczny led scoring for the home team with 17 points. UBC forward Adrienne Parkin led the game's rebounding with seven. Konieczny and Rebecca Potter led Manitoba with five rebounds each.
