At the completion of the 2022-23 season, 134 of 323 University of Manitoba student-athletes qualified for U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status. This is the 12 straight season that 85 or more student-athletes have achieved this national recognition.
Overall, there have been 2,265 Bisons who've earned Academic All-Canadian status since the program started in 1990. This status is earned by maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (80 percent) or better in a student-athletes' field of study at the University of Manitoba.
"We are proud that the University of Manitoba has the ninth-most Academic All-Canadians of all time," said Athletic Director Gene Muller. "We are so honored to celebrate our student-athletes' diligence and commitment to athletic and academic excellence."
"I know how hard it is [to balance academics], when you're also committed full-time to your teams and your athletics. I'm really proud that we have the ninth-most Academic All-Canadians in Canada," added University of Manitoba President Michael Benarroch. "To be able to commit to both [school and sports], these are accomplishments, as athletes and Academic All-Canadians, that we should, and need to celebrate. Congratulations to all."
Some major highlights include 56 student-athletes who earned a GPA of 4.0 or higher, while six earned a perfect 4.5 GPA (Katie Chatyrbok -- women's hockey, Madisson Lawrence -- track and field, Britney Blunderfield -- soccer, Angela Kroeker -- track and field, Hayley Turner -- track and field and Mitch Dyck -- men's hockey).
Additionally, two Bisons achieved U SPORTS recognition in all five varsity years of eligibility (plus COVID): Darby Goodall (track and field) and Dora Modrcin (swimming). Katie Chatrybok (women's hockey), Emily Johnson (women's basketball), Anna McConnell (track and field), Amy Klippenstein (track and field) and Emily Watson are also five consecutive-year Academic All-Canadians. A total of 13 student-athletes also achieved recognition in four successive varsity years.
