No. 1 ranked basketball star Kyu Fust returning home, transfers to Manitoba for 2025-26 season

A two-time provincial champion and tournament MVP, Fust did lose a game in over two years with the Dakota Lancers. She's played the last two U SPORTS seasons with the Regina Cougars.

The No. 1 ranked women's basketball player in Manitoba in 2023 is returning home. Kyu Fust, a 6'0" forward will suit up for the Bisons in 2025-26, after playing the last two U SPORTS campaigns with the Regina Cougars, helping the team to 28 combined regular season wins. She is eligible to play immediately. 

"We're beyond thrilled to see Kyu in a Bisons uniform. She was a top priority during her graduating year, and watching her growth into a standout U SPORTS player has been a joy from afar," said Manitoba head coach Michele Sung. 

"Her impact has been immediate, bringing depth to our roster with her versatility and ability to excel in multiple positions."

Fust was a back-to-back provincial champion and MVP in 2022 and 2023 with the Dakota Lancers, going undefeated both seasons under head coach Eric Sung, Michele's husband. Fust had 15 points and ten rebounds in an 87-48 victory in the 4A final in '22 and 15 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot in a 67-43 victory in the championship in '23. Fust was also the MHSAA Female Athlete of the Year in 2023. 

The Winnipeg native made an immediate impact playing for the Regina Cougars in university. She played in all 40 regular season games in her two seasons for the U of R, starting 16 times. She averaged 4.5 points and and 3.6 rebounds in 16.9 minutes played as a true freshman, including a season-high 13 points against Brandon on December 1st. The following season she averaged 3.5 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game and 20.6 minutes played per game, scoring a career-high 17 points against UNBC on November 14. 

In returning to Manitoba, Fust is re-united with Lancers teammates Darya Rom and Hope Larocque, while Taylor Schepp, the No. 1 ranked high school player in Manitoba this past season, is another Dakota provincial champ who Fust knows from her high school days.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue my basketball journey with the Bisons," Fust said. "I look forward to growing as a player, learning from this group and contributing to our team's success in every way that I can."

Fust has tons of family ties to the Herd. Her dad Paul was a five-year standout for the men's basketball team, earning GPAC First Team All-Star honours in 1999. Her grandpa also played for the Bisons football team, while her mom Brooke played for five years at the University of Winnipeg, winning a national bronze medal in 2002.
