Box Score The Manitoba Bisons men's basketball team continued their early season struggles with an 86-66 loss to the Calgary Dinos on Friday, Nov. 15 afternoon at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
"We got outcompeted for a stretch," said Bisons head coach
Kirby Schepp. "They really played a lot more physical than us. One of our goals was to get to the free throw line and we couldn't do that.
Calgary (1-4) notched their first win of the season and was led by a 21 point, eight rebound performance from Matt Letkeman. As a team, the Dinos shot 34-of-67 (50.7%) from the field.
Mike Holloway and
Andre Arruda each had 12 points for the Bisons (1-4).
Dallas Karch's reverse layup in the waning seconds of the first quarter gave Calgary an early two point lead. The Dinos expanded that margin to seven in the second quarter on a beautiful four point play from Josh Turner, who hit a fade-away three while being fouled.
The visitors continued to pull away as the quarter progressed. As the buzzer sounded for the half, Winnipeg native Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson pulled up from well beyond the three-point line and banked it in to give the Dinos a 43-27 halftime lead. Letkeman led all players at the break with 11 points and eight rebounds. Manitoba was unable to earn a trip to the foul line in the first half.
Calgary maintained a double digit lead through three quarters. Holloway sparked the Bisons at a few points in the quarter but the team was unable to sustain any consistent offensive attack. The Dinos built on their lead right up until the final buzzer, outworking the Bisons on way to their first victory of the 2013-14 regular season.
Frustration from the game was visible on the Manitoba bench as Schepp picked up a technical foul in the game's final minutes.
Calgary and Manitoba will battle once more tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
