The Manitoba Bisons basketball teams begin 2014 by hosting the Trinity Western Spartans in the first game of the second half of the 2013-14 conference regular season on Friday, January 10 and then hosting Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, January 11 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus). On Friday, the women's game will be at 6 p.m. CT and the men's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT while on Sat., women's start at 5 p.m. CT and men's at 7 p.m. CT.
The Bison women's basketball team (3-7) seeks to snap a six game conference losing streak against Trinity (1-9) and #7 Fraser Valley (7-3). Manitoba last won on Nov. 9 (W 61-53 at Lethbridge) and has lost two games by five points or less and one in overtime during the losing streak. The team played out East over the holiday break.
In this conference season, the Bisons are 13th in scoring offence at 60.4 points per game and ninth in scoring defence at 63.7 points per game. In Canada West free throw percentage, Manitoba is second at 74.5% and eighth in field goal percentage at 37.7%. The Bison men's basketball team (1-9) is looking to break a eight game conference losing streak against Trinity (5-5) and Fraser Valley (5-5). Manitoba last won on Nov. 2 (W 83-78 vs. Mount Royal) and has lost three games by five points or less. The team played in the annual Wesmen Classic and finished third with 2-1 record.
In this conference season, the Bisons are 14th in scoring offence at 69.6 points per game and 15th in scoring defence at 80.6 points per game. In Canada West free throw percentage, Manitoba is sixth at 72.4% and sixth in 3-point percentage at 34.4%. In rebounding defence, the Bisons are fifth at 36.7 per game and tied for sixth with 8.2 steals per game while seventh in defensive rebounding at 70.0%. Guard Andre Arruda leads team and tied for 26th in Canada West scoring at 11.9 points per game. Dan Penner is fifth in free throw percentage at 84.2% and Amir Ali is tied for fourth with 50.0% in 3-point pct.
