On the road in men's basketball Bisons drop 76-71 result at #10 Calgary

CALGARY - In their biggest game of the year up to this point in the 2014-2015 season, the #10 University of Calgary Dinos took their play to another level, in a battle of men's basketball teams at the top of the Pioneers Division. 

The Dinos fought back from an eight-point deficit at halftime to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 76-71 at home on Friday, November 21, where they remain undefeated. The Dinos held the top scoring teaming in the conference 20 points below their average on their way to improving to 6-1 and taking over first place in the division. Manitoba drops to  5-2 record.

The Dinos were led once again by fifth-year point guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson who finished with 22 points and with six defensive rebounds, is now fourth all-time in that category for the Dinos with 463. L.J. Hegwood continued his strong play off the bench with 20 points. 

Tied at 15 at the end of the first quarter, the Bisons took control in the second outscoring Calgary 21-13 to take a 36-28 lead at halftime. But in the third quarter, the Dinos were sparked by Josh Owen-Thomas who hit there three-point fields goals. He scored nine points in the first 3:38 of the quarter, with his third three giving the Dinos a two-point lead. The Bisons would take the lead back, but Ogungbemi-Jackson would make two lay-ups to give Calgary the 53-51 lead going into the fourth quarter. 

The fourth quarter was tightly played, but the Bisons could not take the game over as Calgary ended with a five-point victory. 

Manitoba would take a 57-55 lead early in the fourth, but they wouldn't lead again, as Hegwood knocked down a jumper to tie it at 8:37 and then Ogungbemi-Jackson would score another layup soon after to give the Dinos the lead. The Bisons would tie it one more time, but the Dinos would seal the game at the free-throw line. 

Facing the top rebounding team in the conference and country, the Dinos battled all night on the boards, out rebounding the Bisons 41-37. The Bisons were led by forward Jonathan Alexander who finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds including a massive put back dunk in the third quarter. Calgary continued to shoot well from field, finishing with 50.8 per cent for the game to Manitoba's 40. The game was tied 14 times and there were eight lead changes. 

With the victory and Victoria losing to Saskatchewan earlier in the night, Calgary is now in first place with a record of 6-1, while the Bisons are 5-2. 

The Dinos and Bisons play again on Sat., Nov. 22 at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium at 7 p.m. MT on canadawest.tv website.
