Manitoba South East Prairie Thunder take home Allan Cup at Senior Nationals

Bison Alumni Win Allan Cup!

Bison Alumni Win Allan Cup!

Seventeen Alumni from the University of Manitoba Bison Men's Hockey program helped the South East Manitoba Prairie Thunder recently capture the 2015 Allan Cup. Since 1909, the prestigious Allan Cup has been awarded to the best Senior Men's hockey team in Canada. The Prairie Thunder defeated the Bentley Generals from Alberta 2-0 in the final game of the championship tournament played April13-18 in Newfoundland.

Former Bison and CIS 2009/10 Goaltender of the Year, Steve Christie earned the shutout and received the tournament MVP Award. Bison Alumnus, Del Cowan was selected as a tournament All Star.

Steve Christie quote: "It was a great team win, everyone contributed to the success we had this week. Our Offense came from all lines and our D core was solid every game. We played a patient game that frustrated them and capitalized on our chance to score. For me personally, this was the first championship I have ever won. I've lost finals in Jr, College and Pro so to finally win meant a lot. The MVP was just some icing on the cake I guess. I felt good all week and was able to make saves and control rebounds because of the guys playing in front of me."

The following Bison Alumni contributed to the South East Prairie Thunder national championship season:

Del Cowan, Riley Dudar, Blake Forsyth, Nick Cowan, Tyler Dittmer, Dustin Hughes, Greg Beller, Blair Macaulay, Rob Smith, Steve Christie, Mark Friesen, Brad Purdie, Mike Hellyer, Dane Crowley, Brandon Lockerby, Jamie Dowhayko, and Travis Kornelsen.
