Manitoba Bisons Defeat #7 UBC Thunderbirds 66-64 In Men’s Basketball

The two teams will play each other again tomorrow, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. CT at Investors Group Athletic Centre

Box Score WINNIPEG, MB – It was a high-speed, high-intensity men's basketball game between the #7 University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds and the Manitoba Bisons at Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday, January 15. The Bisons took an early lead and managed to narrowly hold onto it throughout the game—winning 66-64. UBC is now 8-3 for the conference season, while Manitoba is now 8-3 in Canada West and both teams tied for second in the Pioneer Division.

The battle of top teams in the Pioneer Division kept the raucous home crowd on their feet for much of the game. Both teams had strong offensive efforts and matched each other's intensity. In the end, Manitoba's early lead proved insurmountable.

"We matched their energy level for probably 35 minutes of the game," said Bisons Head Coach Kirby Schepp. "Then we ran out of gas a little bit and had just enough of a lead to hold on."

UBC forward, David Wagner, started the game with a lay-up and a three-pointer to give his team an early 5-0 lead. However, this was short-lived as Bisons' guard Justus Alleyn answered with two threes of his own and led his team's offense to a 23-19 lead by the end of the first quarter.

UBC guard, Philip Jalalpoor, opened the second with a three to bring the game within one, but that was followed by a 7-point run for Manitoba. Alleyn continued to lead the Bisons' offense, entering halftime with 15 points and Manitoba leading 38-31.

The Thunderbirds started the second half with strong offensive pressure—but the Bisons matched their intensity. UBC got as close as three points behind, led by guard Conor Morgan—who scored the only dunk of the game. Manitoba entered the fourth with a 55-47 lead.

The home team's lead grew from there, with their defense shutting down UBC for the first half of the last quarter. A three-point play by forward Wyatt Anders led to a 13-point lead, but UBC began to rally back shortly after. Following a three-point play by Morgan, the score was 64-62 for the home team with a minute left. Despite UBC's best efforts, Manitoba managed to hang on and clinch an important 66-64 win.

UBC's Morgan led the game with 22 points, followed closely by Manitoba's Alleyn with 21. Morgan also led the game's rebounding with 10, and Alleyn also led his team in rebounds with 8.

The two teams will play each other again tomorrow, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. CT at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
