WINNIPEG, MAN – In what can only be described as a tooth-and-nail affair, the undefeated #3 ranked Calgary Dinos (7-0-0) continued its dominance over its CIS Canada West Men's Hockey counterparts with a 4-3 overtime win versus the unranked Manitoba Bisons (2-5-0) Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at Wayne Fleming Arena at Max Bell Centre.
Despite a two-point effort from forward Luke Cain (1G, 1A), a costly penalty from Bisons captain Dane Crowley in the overtime frame provided Calgary the momentum it needed to grab the road victory. On the powerplay, rookie defenceman Drydn Dow scored with just 46 seconds left in overtime, lifting Calgary to the 4-3 victory.
Bisons netminder Deven Dubyk stopped 24 shots in the losing effort, while Calgary's Kris Lazaruk stoned 25 of 28 Manitoba shots in the winning effort.
With just under four minutes left in the first frame, Bisons elder statesman
Luke Cain (fifth-year forward) scored the game's opening goal by making no mistake on a loose puck nary 12 inches from the top of the Dinos' crease. Assisting on Cain's first marker of the season were
Aaron Lewadniuk and
Brendan Rowinski.
Bisons starting goaltender
Deven Dubyk faced eight shots on goal in the first period, applying the brakes on each of them.
Rookie forward Adam Kambeitz put the visiting side on the scoreboard with an even-strength goal with roughly two-minutes left to play in the second period, ending Dubyk's campaign for his second shutout of the young season. Assisting the Dino's freshman was forwards Taylor Stefishen and Christopher Collins.
Taking advantage of a Dinos powerplay (via two-minute crosschecking penalty on Lewadniuk), Calgary's Cory Pritz ripped a bullet from the point, putting the puck over Dubyk's right shoulder and into the back of the net. Pritz' powerplay marker, assisted by forward Christopher Collins, gave the visiting Dinos a 2-1 lead going into the third period.
Calgary's late scoring push in the waning moments of the second period seemingly lit a proverbial fire underneath the Manitoba bench. Just under two minutes into the third frame, the Bisons found redemption. Second-year forward
Dylan Kelly, a Winnipeg, Man. native, tied the affair at two-goals a piece with a nifty snap shot past Lazaruk. The tying marker was assisted by second-year assistant captain,
Jesse Paradis. The goal was Kelly's first of the season.
At 15:52, Calgary's powerplay unit hit pay dirt again. Dinos rookie defenceman Davis Vandane teed off from the blue line, ripping the puck past Dubyk, giving Calgary a 3-2 advantage in the goal column.
With just 2:34 minutes left in the third, the Bisons leaned on the capable shoulders of captain
Dane Crowley – and it paid dividends. The fifth-year Crowley lit the lamp on a breakaway goal, tying the match at three goals apiece.
Just as it looked like the game would require a second overtime period, Calgary defenceman Dryden Dow put the match on ice with a four-on-three powerplay marker.
The two teams butt heads again tomorrow night at Wayne Fleming Arena at Max Bell Centre. Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m. CST.
