Unranked Manitoba Bisons drop two-game series to #3 ranked Calgary Dinos

Undefeated Dinos have Bisons searching for answers

Box Score
WINNIPEG, MAN -- The #3 ranked Calgary Dinos (8-0-0) continue to rule the Canada West hockey roost as they defeated the unranked Manitoba Bisons (2-6-0) 5-3 Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 at Wayne Fleming Arena at Max Bell Centre.

Despite a two-goal performance from assistant captain Jesse Paradis, and a two-point outing from forward Paul Ciarelli, (1G, 1A), Manitoba dropped its second consecutive game to the Dinos and will go into the conference bye week searching for answers.

Manitoba netminder Deven Dubyk, who also got the starting nod last night, stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced. Calgary backstop Jacob DeSerres recorded 18 saves on the 21 shots in the victory.

Manitoba opened the scoring with a powerplay marker courtesy of Bisons second-year forward Jesse Paradis. Blueliner Travis Bobee and forward Brendan Rowinski both chipped in with assists on the Paradis goal. The 6'2" Paradis also recorded a point (1A) in last night's contest.

With both clubs at even strength, Calgary scored its first goal of the evening with 2:54 remaining in the first period. Finding the back of the Manitoba goal was fifth-year blueliner Cory Pritz, netting his third goal of the Canada West season. Teammates Ryan Harrison and Max Ross added their names to the score sheet with assists on the play.

The visiting Dinos took the lead late in first period by taking advantage of a double-minor penalty to Bisons forward Jordan DePape. With the man advantage, Calgary third-year blueliner Giffen Nyren sent a smooth wrist shot from the blue line past Dubyk, giving the Dinos a 2-1 advantage. The goal, scored with a mere 14 ticks left in the frame, was assisted by Ross and third-year forward Kevin King.

The second period's long change provided zero challenge for the Dinos, as Calgary lit the lamp twice in the period.  Scoring both goals for the #3 ranked Dinos was fourth-year forward Walker Wintoneak.

The Bisons cut into the Calgary lead with an even strength goal from second-year forward Paul Ciarelli at 18:21 in the third period. The goal was Ciarelli's first of the 2013-14 Canada West campaign, and was assisted by forward Taylor Dickin and defenceman Lee Christensen.

With 1:32 left in the third, Paradis notched his second goal of the night with a snap shot past a sprawling DeSerres. Paradis' second goal of the game, and third point of the weekend series, cut the Dinos lead to 4-3.

The Dinos added an empty net goal with 45 seconds left in the game by fifth-year forward Blake Clement.

The Bisons go into the conference bye week next weekend, and won't return to action until Friday, Nov, 8 at Regina. The Dinos will play host to the visiting Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, Nov. 8 in their next Canada West hockey action.
