Corfield first-ever Bison women's player; Grimson played in '80s with the Herd

On Mon., Jan. 27, Stacey Corfield and Stu Grimson inducted into Bison Hockey Hall of Fame. Goaltender Corfield was the first-ever Bison women's player while forward Grimson played in the '80s with the Herd.

Stacey Corfield bio

- She is the first ever member of the Bison Women's Hockey team to be inducted into the Bison Hockey Hall of Fame.

- Goaltender Stacey Corfield played from 2005-06 to 2009-10 and was without a doubt one of the most key recruits for the women's program early in its infancy as a full time program in Canada West.

- Corfield made her mark early in the conference, being selected as the Canada West Rookie of the Year in her inaugural season in 2005-06, backstopping the team to its second consecutive berth in the Canada West final.

Corfield's list of accomplishments in a Bison uniform from that point forward are impressive and vast to say the least as she went on to achieve the following:

- A Four time Canada West All-Star

- A Two time CIS All-Canadian

- A Two-Time Bison Female Athlete of the Year

- A Four time Bison Hockey MVP (voted on by her teammates)

- A Gold Medal winner at the Winter Universiade (World University Games) with Team Canada in Harbin, China in 2009-10

- Manitoba Sportswriters and Sports Broadcasters Nominee for Female Athlete of the Year (2009)

- She also led the Bison program to four straight Canada West finals, helping them win their first Canada West Championship in 2008-09 when she stopped 56 of 58 shots in a triple OT victory over Alberta.

- She is also the current all-time leader in Canada West for goaltenders in wins with 64, wins in a season with 21, and second in career shutouts with 17 and second in career minutes played with nearly 6,000 in five years.

- Making Corfield's accomplishments even more impressive is the fact that she played her last two years while enrolled in the demanding Faculty of Nursing program. Her ability to juggle both hockey and an intensive academic load speaks to her character, will and desire to be the best she can be.

- In her final year, Corfield's teammates voted her to wear the 'C', but because of a league rule preventing goalies from wearing a 'C' in games it was not allowed.

- Corfield has gone on to a successful start to her nursing career as well as coaching at both the varsity level in the Bison program, the AAA midget level in Manitoba and was selected to participate as a coach in last June's goalie evaluation program with Hockey Canada.

Stu Grimson bio

- Stu Grimson has now been inducted into the Bison Hockey Hall of Fame

- He played two seasons with the University of Manitoba Bisons under Coach Wayne Fleming, from 1985 to 1987 where he played 41 games scoring 15 goals, 12 assists, for 27 points and 180 PIM's at the forward position.

- The Bisons helped launch Grimson on to a professional hockey career starting in the Calgary Flames organization playing for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the International Hockey League. He played 171 games and scored 26 goals, 31 assists for 57 points and 984 PIM's in three seasons for Salt Lake from 1987 to 1990.

- From Salt Lake, Grimson advanced his career to the NHL where he earned the nickname "the Grim Reaper" for his reputation as one of the very toughest players in the league. In 1990-91 the Chicago Blackhawks acquired Grimson from Calgary and Grimson would become a key part of a strong Blackhawks team that had a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1992.

- The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim recognized Grimson's leadership abilities and selected Grimson from the Blackhawks in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft. Grimson's National Hockey League career spanned 16 seasons and he posted 17 goals, 22 assists and 2,113 penalty minutes in 729 career games with Calgary, Chicago, Anaheim, Detroit, Hartford, Carolina, Los Angeles and Nashville from 1987-2003.

- After retiring from the NHL following the 2002-03 season, Grimson returned to school to finish his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba, then earned a law degree from the University of Memphis in December of 2005.

- The Kamloops, B.C., native then went to work as a labor lawyer for the National Hockey League Player Association for two years before returning to Nashville to work as a defense attorney with Kay, Griffin, Enkema & Colbert, PLLC.

- Grimson is now in his sixth season as a colour analyst on the Nashville Predators Radio Network. He currently serves as the President of the recently-formed Nashville Predators Alumni Association as well as President of the Nashville Jr. Predators youth hockey club.

- Grimson resides in Brentwood with his wife, Pam, their three daughters, Erin, Hannah and Jayne and son, Kristjan.
