Box Score SASKATOON - Special teams proved to be the difference in a 5-2 University of Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team win over the No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday, October 11 night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.
Manitoba capitalized twice on five opportunities with the man-advantage, while the Huskies scored just once on their 11 attempts in the game. The Bisons also killed off two five-on-three chances for Saskatchewan.
With the win, Manitoba improves to 4-2-0 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 4-2-0 after winning its first four games of the season. A night earlier, the Bisons won 4-1.
Aaron Lewadniuk opened the scoring for Manitoba just 54 seconds into the game. But the lead didn't last long. Rookie defence man Jordan Fransoo beat Manitoba netminder Deven Dubyk at 4:45 to tie the game. Manitoba regained the lead with its first power play goal by Jordan DePape at 12:49 in the frame.
Taylor Dickin extended the Bisons' lead to two goals at 7:24 in the second period, before Rhyse Dieno cut the lead in half at 10:14 in the third on the Huskies' lone power play goal. It was as close as Saskatchewan would come.
Manitoba added goals by Jesse Paradis on the power play at 17:34 and an empty netter by DePape at 19:11.
Dubyk made 28 saves in the win for the Bisons, while Jordon Cooke stopped 26 in the loss for Saskatchewan.
The Huskies hit the road to meet the Alberta Golden Bears next weekend, while the Bisons return home to host the Mount Royal Cougars at Wayne Fleming Arena on October 17 at 7 p.m. CT and October 18 at 1 p.m. CT .
