Box Score Lethbridge - The University of Lethbridge men's hockey team picked up their first victory of the season, dropping the visiting Manitoba Bisons by a score of 3-1. Not only was it the Horns first regular season win but first-year head coach Spiros Anastas also picked up his first Canada West victory.
Tim Campbell, Brandon Clowes and Brock Hirsche scored for the Pronghorns, while Brett Dudar responded for the Bisons.
With the loss, Manitoba falls to 5-4-0 record while Lethbridge is now 1-8-0.
Despite being down a man early in the first, the Pronghorns opened up the scoring with a shorthanded marker at the 2:07 mark with Campbell taking a Mitch Maxwell feed and ripping a shot past Devin Dubyk.
Manitoba almost evened the game up near the midway point of the opening frame when 'Horns goalie Damien Ketlo misplayed a puck behind his net, leaving Taylor Dicken of the Bisons with a glorious chance to bang home the equalizer. Fortunately for the Ketlo, his defenseman were there to keep the puck out of the net and give him enough time to scramble back into his crease to cover the puck and preserve the one-goal lead.
With the first period nearing to a conclusion, the Horns had a glorious chance to extend their lead heading into the intermission. Brock Hirshe sprung Mitch Maxwell on a clear breakaway but unfortunately for the Horns, the former Lethbridge Hurricane standout was stoned on the backhand by the pad of Dubyk.
The shots on goal reflected the back and forth nature of the first period with both teams having 10 apiece.
Horns leading scorer Brandon Clowes had the first great opportunity of the second period. Clowes, a transfer from the University of Alabama-Huntsville, broke in all alone on Dubnyk, only to miss his mark and fire the puck over the net.
With time dwindling in the second, the Bisons broke in on a 3-on-1 after a Horns collision at in the neutral zone. Jesse Paradis kept on the break, ripping a low shot to the stick side but Ketlo was equal to the task. Shaquille Merasty bounced on the rebound with an empty net, but 'Horns defender Ryan Aasman was able to block Merasty's attempt.
Despite dominating the Horns 13-6 in shots on goal in the second frame, the Horns held on to a 1-0 lead heading into the third.
The Horns added their second goal of the game while on a two-man advantage. Artisom Kalashnikov wired a slap shot wide but the puck bounced off of the end boards in front of the net to Brandon Clowes. Clowes slammed home the puck to give the Horns an all-important insurance marker with just over 18 minutes to play.
The Horns would need the insurance goal as the Bisons made the 'Horns pay for a defensive zone turnover which led to a 3-on-1 rush where Dudar took a backdoor feed from Taylor Dicken and wired the puck past a down and out Ketlo.
Brock Hirsche added an empty netter to put Horns up 3-1 and add the finishing touch to their first victory of the season.
With the victory, the Horns move to 1-8-0 on the season while the Bisons fall to 5-4-0. The Horns and Bisons will match-up again tomorrow with a 7:00pm puck drop at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Tomorrow night's action can also be viewed on http://canadawest.tv.
