Bisons Defeated by #1 Ranked Golden Bears in Men's Hockey

Bisons fall to 5-7-0 on the season after 4-2 loss

Box Score The Manitoba Bisons and number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears picked up where they had left the night before in a fast paced, no-holds barred tilt on Saturday November 8, at Wayne Fleming Arena.

The Bisons put up a valiant fight against the best team in the country, but the speed and constant fore-check of the Golden Bears won the day in the end, carrying them to a 4-2 victory.

Alberta had four different goal scorers, and carried the play for much of the night. TJ Foster, Kruise Reddick, and Levko Koper potted goals before Jordan Hickmott added an empty netter with 15.7 seconds remaining to lock up the victory.

Shaq Merasty and Reid Gow replied for the Bisons, who were outshot 33-17 and lost their second straight game to Alberta. Goaltender Deven Dubyk finished with 29 saves.

The game got off to a fast, physical start, and the physicality and pace stayed constant throughout the game. Bodies flew everywhere as both teams hit hard and often, and blocked shots. In particular, Alberta's Thomas Carr was a shot-blocking machine, a huge part of several penalty kills.
In spite of the loss, Manitoba Coach Mike Sirant was pleased with his team's effort.

"I thought we played well tonight," said Sirant. "I thought we not only competed and worked hard but played very well. I think we took a step forward as a team from last night, and it's discouraging not to come away with at least a point for our efforts."

Sirant also acknowledged the prowess of their opposition. "They're the number one ranked team in the country," Sirant said of the Golden Bears, "and I think they deserve that ranking."

One bright spot for the Bisons, according to Sirant, was the power play. The Bisons converted on a power play in the second period when Shaq Merasty batted the puck out of the air to make it a 3-2 game.

"Shaq is effective in front of the net," said Sirant, noting that assistant coach Brad Purdie has done a good job with the power play strategy. "He's got great hands, great hand-eye coordination. Our entire power play played well."

In the end, the Golden Bears proved themselves worthy of the title of number one ranked team, and now enjoy a brief layoff before hosting UBC in a back-to-back on November 14 and 15. The Bisons, meanwhile, have another tough test ahead of them with number five-ranked Calgary in town on November 14 and 15, with the games starting at 7 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. CT respectively.
