Box Score

CALGARY – In the 2014-15 Canada West season opener for men's hockey, two goals in each period helped the University of Calgary Dinos to a win in their first game of the season, 6-1 over the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday, September 26 night at the Father David Bauer Arena. In a rematch of last year's Canada West Semi-Final, the Dinos played a business-like game, led by strong production on the power play with three tallies. Newly minted team captain Kevin King and Kodie Curran – fresh from a return from Tampa Bay Lightning camp – each had a goal and two assists to lead all skaters.

Calgary opens the season with a 1-0-0, while Manitoba drops their first game of the year.

Despite a full pre-season by both teams, the first period of the regular season began with a slow start as neither side registered a shot through five minutes. The Dinos would open the scoring at the 7:05 mark on a power play as Spencer Edwards tipped a Curran point shot through Deven Dubyk.

With a man advantage of their own two minutes later, Manitoba tied the game. Kris Lazaruk stopped the initial long shot by Luke Paulsen, but on the door step was first-year forward Chad Robinson who smacked his first CIS goal past the down-and-out Dinos goaltender.

Another redirection restored a one-goal lead for the Dinos at the 15:34 mark of the first. Curran took the first shot that was saved but not covered by Dubyk. Dylan Walchuk got to the puck before the Manitoba goaltender could cover it and fed it to King who netted his first of the year.

After the goal by King, Calgary began to take control of the play and started firing on all cylinders. The Dinos grabbed a two-goal lead less than a minute into the middle frame as Walchuk jumped on a rebound off the stick off Phil Tot.

The Dinos opened up a three-goal lead in the final minute of the second period on a power play. Davis Vandane blasted a hard shot from the blue line that was denied, but to the left of the net was Elgin Pearce who skillfully backhanded a shot over the shoulder of Dubyk to make it 4-1 through 40 minutes.

With everything going their way, Calgary closed out the third period with two more goals. A shot from the left side gave Cain Franson his first colligate goal at the 6:04 mark, before Curran scored his first with a hard shot from the point at the 10:21 mark on the power play.

Calgary outshot Manitoba 31-17. The Dinos went 3-for-4 on the power play, while the Bisons went 0-for-2.

The Dinos and Bisons continue their two-game set on Saturday, September 27 night at the Father David Bauer Arena.
