Box Score CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team lost their second game of the weekend against the University of Manitoba Bisons, 5-2 Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31 at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary. With road weekend sweep, Manitoba is now on three game conference win streak and have a 4-3-1 record.
After losing to Manitoba Friday evening (Oct. 30) the Dinos looked to end the series with a win, splitting the weekend but Manitoba had other plans as they swept the weekend.
"We weren't ready to play and play at the right level. Manitoba played a really good team game, they moved the puck well," explained Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "We just weren't hard on the puck, didn't have good support, and had to many turnovers. We didn't play well as a group. At home we expect more then that."
The Bisons picked up were they left off on Friday evening, capitalizing on an early power play mid-way through the first period. Shaq Merasty tipped Adam Henry's slap shot from the point past a screened Dinos' goaltender Myles Hovdebo.
Manitoba increased their lead to two just three minutes later when Brett Stovin put a low wrist shot on Hovdebo's glove side, Jesse Paradis was in front of the net to put in the rebound.
The Dinos cut the Bisons lead to one before the end of the first period. Drydn Dow fired a low shot on net from the point, Bisons' goaltender Byron Spriggs made the first save but Chris Collins was in front to put in the rebound.
Manitoba didn't sit back in the second period. After a Calgary penalty just expired Merasty fired a wrist shot from the side of the net, Hovdebo made the initial save but Merasty was there to put in his own rebound. Jordan DePape and Channing Bresciani picked up helpers on the goal.
Calgary continued to try and cut the Bison's lead in the final stanza. Adam Kambeitz put in a low snap shot on the power play after Elgin Pearce fed Kambeitz the puck down low, backdoor. Kevin King picked up an assist on the play.
"A lot of turnovers on entry and in the offensive zone lead them to their transition, they got a few breakaways off of it," said Howell. "We were sloppy with the puck and missed assignments, when you make turnovers where we did it is really tough to defend because guys are trying to play offence. We need to be smarter with the puck."
The Bisons regained their lead mid-way through the period when Jonah Wasylak entered the Dinos zone and passed to Liam Bilton who was skating towards the net. Bilton beat a Calgary defender before beating Hovdebo on the ice glove side.
Manitoba reaffirmed their lead near the end of the third period. Paradis hit Stovin with a cross-ice pass, Stovin on a partial breakaway, fired a high glove side wrist shot that Hovdebo got a piece of but not enough to stop the puck from going in.
The Bisons will return to Alberta next weekend, Nov 6-7 to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The Dinos will host the University of Regina Cougars Nov. 6-7 at their home rink the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
