Box Score EDMONTON – Sophomore goalie Byron Spriggs stopped 43 of 45 shots, as he led the University of Manitoba Bisons to a thrilling 3-2 win over the No. 3 University of Alberta Golden Bears Saturday, November 7 night at Clare Drake Arena in men's hockey.
Brett Brooks scored a pair, while Jordan DePape scored in the final 20 seconds to lift the Bisons to the victory. Brett Ferguson and Rhett Rachinksi were the goal scorers for Alberta.
The win gives the visiting Bisons a huge three out of a possible four points on in Edmonton, and improves their record to 5-3-2 on the season. The Bears, meanwhile, dropped their second of three home games this season, and fall to 6-3-1, as they remain in third place in the conference.
The Golden Bears would find the scoreboard first in Saturday night's matchup. Sophomore Stephane Legault would find Ferguson in the slot with a beauty pass, giving the Bears the early 1-0 advantage. However, the Bisons would strike back in the first. After DePage's initial shot was stopped, Brooks would bury the huge rebound given out by Luke Siemens, evening the game at one. Brooks wasn't done there, as he recorded his second goal of the period off a one touch pass from Liam Bilton, and the Bisons took the 2-1 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Bears started to dictate the pace of play in the second period, dominating possession, and outshooting Manitoba 11-3, but Spriggs came up big, stopping all 11 shots. Levko Koper and Thomas Carr had the best opportunities of the frame, but a bouncing puck and broken stick negated any goals.
Alberta came out firing in the third period looking for the equalizer. Spriggs made four tremendous saves to keep the one goal lead, as he was the sole reason the Bears couldn't level the game. In the final two minutes of the third, after Spriggs stopped the initial five Bears shots, Rachinksi would finally tie the game, as he roofed a shot over an exhausted Spriggs.
Just when the game looked destined for overtime, the Bisons shocked the home crowd, scoring the game winner with just 11 seconds left. Similar to the previous night, rookie Brett Stovin fed a phenomenal no-look pass into the Bears crease, and DePape was able to beat a fooled Siemens.
Despite outshooting the Bisons 45-19, and dominating for over 40 minutes of hockey on Saturday, the Bears would end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
After the win, the Bisons will head home for a two game set with the 2-5-1 Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Bears, meanwhile, will play the 4-5-1 Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series next weekend (Nov. 13-14).
