Box Score

EDMONTON – The No. 5 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears scored four unanswered goals through the second and third periods, beating the visiting Manitoba Bisons 6-3 Friday, Nov. 18 night in men's hockey at Clare Drake Arena.

Trevor Cox scored twice, while Cole Linaker, Tyson Baillie, Jayden Hart and Todd Fiddler also scored for the Bears. Jordan DePape, Warren Callis, and Jonah Wasylak scored for Manitoba in the loss.

Wth the win, the Golden Bears improve to 8-3-0 this season, keeping pace with the top ranked Saskatchewan Huskies atop the Canada West standings. Manitoba, meanwhile, slips to 5-6-0, falling just below .500 and into sixth in the conference.

Although they came in as a heavy underdog, the visiting Bisons opened the scoring very early on Friday night. Bison captain DePape opened the scoring just one minute into the first, banging a loose puck past Luke Siemens and into the Alberta net. Linaker scored his second goal of the season ten minutes later, bouncing the puck off Byron Spriggs' pads and into his own net to even the game.

Callis' third tally of the season late in the first gave Manitoba the 2-1 lead heading into the break, as he caught Siemens playing too aggressively in his own net, getting the puck behind the fourth-year goalie.

Alberta evened the score midway through the second, as Cox scored his first of the night, blowing an absolute bullet past Spriggs on a Bears three-on-one rush. Wasylak needed only two minutes to restore the Bison one goal lead, ripping a shot over Siemens glove from distance.

Despite trailing 3-2, the Bears outshot the Bisons 28-8 in the final 40 minutes. The massive advantage in shot and possession numbers paid off, as Fiddler, a first year Canada West forward scored his first career goal to even the game at three.

Cox scored his second of the night before the period was up, while Hart scored the insurance marker early in the third. Baillie put the nail in the coffin late in the final period, scoring his sixth of the season on a Bears five-on-three man advantage in the dying minutes.

The two teams will square off once again tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 19), with a 7 p.m. CT puck drop scheduled for Clare Drake Arena.
