Bison men's hockey continues to build for the future, announcing today the signing of two of the top players from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), in forward Andrew Boucher and defenceman Owen Wareham.
"Owen and Andrew are two of the best graduating MJHL players at their respective positions and we're very excited that they chose the University of Manitoba to further their hockey and academic careers," said head coach
Mike Sirant.
"Both players have the athletic potential to excel in U SPORTS men's hockey but they are also outstanding people and leaders who fit the Bisons culture. They compete hard, are dedicated to developing their game, are coachable, respectful, humble and have a team first attitude, and are committed to helping the Bisons win."
Boucher, a 20-year-old, 6'2", 195-pounder from Morden, played for Waywayseecappo for the last three seasons. He was the team's captain last year, and has scored 97 points over the last two seasons. This past year, he set a career high, tallying 51 points in 36 games.
Wareham, a 6'2", 205-pound 20-year old from Rivers, most recently donned the 'C' for the Dauphin Kings, scoring a career-high 37 points in 2022-23. He was also a member of the Kings' Turnbull Cup-winning team the year prior, where he suited up with fellow Bison
Parker Malchuk.
Wareham was Dauphin's MVP this past year as well as top defenceman. He also earned the former as a member of the Yellowhead Chiefs in 2019. He's recorded a combined 155 points over 284 games played between the two teams.
"Owen is a complete defenseman who has excellent mobility, really good puck skills and vision to move the puck, is smart and solid defensively, and has a physical presence on the ice," said Sirant. "Andrew is a big body forward who moves well, has really good puck skills and vision, so he has excellent playmaking abilities. He goes to the tough areas on the ice, and he can shoot and score! Andrew was among the MJHL leaders in points per game."
