Building for 2023-24, the men's hockey team has added another veteran presence from the MJHL, securing the commitment of 5'11", 200-pound defenceman Kian Calder.
A Portage, MB native, Calder played 102 games for the Portage Terriers, donning the 'C' in 2022-23 in a memorable run for his hometown team. Portage finished the MJHL regular season with 43 wins and 90 points, the best record in the league. They were upset in the second round of the Turnbull Cup playoffs, but surged through the Centennial Cup as hosts of the National Junior A Championship.
Calder recorded six points in six games at the Centennial Cup, as the Terriers advanced to the semi-finals of the ten-team tournament. Notably, he had the game-winner against the Yarmouth Mariners in the quarter-finals, helping secure a 2-1 win. Overall in his career with Portage, Calder had 75 points, and he was also the team's Playoff MVP and Defenceman of the Year this past season. Additionally, he was an SJHL champ with the Estevan Bruins in 2021-22, recording 33 points in 45 games.
Off the ice, Calder has been an honour roll student ever year of high school and received the MJHL's RBC Community Ambassador Award for his work in the community in 2022-23. His cousin Doyle Moar is also a Bisons alum who played from 1998-2002.
"The University of Manitoba was an easy choice for myself. Through my recruiting process it was apparent that the program itself was top tier not only on the ice, but off the ice as well," he said. "The academic system in place for athletes at the U of M is fantastic. I'm excited to help bring success to the Bisons and further develop as an athlete and person."
