Men's hockey announce commitment of award-winning goalie Kolby Thornton

The 6'1", 180-pound Winnipeg native most recently played for Aurora University in the NCAA.

Head coach Gordon Burnett and the men's hockey program added a key piece in net today, announcing the commitment of Kolby Thornton. The 6'1", 180-pound Winnipeg native most recently played for Aurora University in the NCAA, where he received NCHA All-Conference and All-Second Freshman Team honours.

Prior to his time at Aurora, Thornton had an impressive junior hockey career, earning Rookie of the Year recognition with the Neepawa Natives of the MJHL in 2018-19, as well as being named Goalie of the Year and Team MVP with the Lloydminster Bobcats in the AJHL in 2022. Statistically, he's had a combined save percentage of .910 over his last three seasons and he also set Aurora's program record for saves in a game, with 65 this past year.

Off the ice, Thornton received the Chilliwack Chiefs' community service award in 2020 and he was also on the Dean's list in the classroom in 2022 and 2023.

"The University of Manitoba was an easy choice for me in both my hockey career and schooling," he said. "I have always wanted to come back home, and when the chance to play for the Bisons came about I knew I couldn't turn it down. I am extremely excited to be a Bison and can't wait to get started."
